Favourite Walks - Puck’s Glen

Puck’s Glen is one of the most well known walks in the area.  The start of the walk is very near Benmore Botanic Garden, it’s actually part of the Benmore Estate.  It takes around 30 minutes to get there by car from Loch Riddon Bothy  and is on the east side of the A815, 5 miles north of Dunoon and 1 mile south of Benmore Botanic Gardens.

Puck’s Glen

There is a designated and well signed car park.  The walk basically follows a deep, woodland gorge criss crossing from one side to the other and at times hugging giant overhangs.  The burn plunges down a series of waterfalls on its way through the glen.  The whole area is quite densely wooded, much of it with Douglas Firs, so the walk is mainly shaded though there are some areas of dappled shade. The rocks that rise up from the burn are steep and covered with mosses and lichen.

One of the many Waterfalls

There is a well made path throughout the walk. The paths are firm and give a good footing even when they are damp. The wooden bridges which enable you to cross the burn are excellent viewpoints.  There are some steep and narrow sections with several steep flights of steps.

Some of the Steps and a Bridge

The walk is circular and I recommend you walking up the gorge and back down the more open track that runs parallel to the gorge but at a higher level. The whole walk is designated ‘Strenuous’ and takes about an hour.  It would be a great choice of walk if you were also planning to visit Benmore Botanic Gardens a little further along the road.
