Wild Kabn Kitchen
If you’re looking for a new and somewhat different dining experience whilst you’re staying at Loch Riddon Bothy, I can highly recommend eating at the Wild Kabn Kitchen. This is a relatively new business and it is not easy to find information about it.
The venue is on Ardkinglas Estate about 30 minutes drive from the Bothy. You are sent directions to the Kitchen when you book. It adds to the sense of mystery that it is accessed by single track roads and tracks deep in the woods. The parking area is surrounded by trees and you walk down a track and past a walled garden before reaching your destination - a stunning set of somewhat dilapidated glasshouses.
Chef William Hamer has used some of the original glass houses to set up an outside kitchen with an inside seating area in the Vine Room.
William is passionate about cooking with fire and is happy to explain exactly what he does. Basically four out of the five courses we enjoyed were cooked either IN the fire or OVER the fire – or sometimes a combination of the two. Guests are welcome to make frequent visits to the fire during the meal to see how their next course is doing.
William uses local produce and as fresh as he can get it. He celebrates the connection between food, fire and nature and loves to support local suppliers and businesses.
We went as a group of four a couple of weeks ago. As it is called a supper club we were expecting to meet other diners but that night we were the only guests – what a special experience!
The table is set up in the Vine Room and unsurprisingly perhaps has an enormous vine growing across the roof with huge bunches of delicious grapes hanging down.
It is broad daylight on arrival but as it gets dark the candles and fairy lights only add to the wonderful atmosphere.
There are not many Wild Kabn Kitchen Supper Club dates available as William travels far and wide cooking in his own unique way. So, go ahead and organise a whole mini break around a meal in the Vine Room.
